This project addresses unscreened, impassable
irrigation water diversions that serve a less than efficient irrigation
system. Major tasks include the installation of a fish screen, fish
passage structure, mini-pivot irrigation systems, and site restoration
by planting appropriate riparian tree and shrub species.
The project site includes a springbrook waterway known as Cabin Creek,
and Dry Creek, which is a tributary to the Yakima River at RM 157.
From the project site downstream to a side channel of the Yakima River
is rearing habitat for juvenile spring Chinook salmon and resident
fish (e.g. rainbow trout). The irrigation diversion structures currently
blocks access to approximately 1.2 miles of rearing habitat.
The Kittitas County Conservation District is sponsoring this project
as part of the Yakima
Tributary Access and Habitat Program (YTAHP). YTAHP
was conceived by a consortium of local irrigation and conservation
districts, as well as WDFW (www.wa.gov/wdfw). The Bonneville
Power Administration(BPA) awarded the YTAHP
core team $2.2 million for FY02 to FY04. This funding will provide
the staff and other infrastructure necessary to address hundreds of
fish screen and passage projects on tributaries in the Yakima basin.
Eleven sites in Kittitas and Yakima County were identified as early
action, including this project site.
This project is an exceptional opportunity to provide immediate benefit
to juvenile salmonids, while taking advantage of the resources and
expertise provided through the YTAHP.
