These are several projects in Kittitas and Yakima Counties that are funded and constructed or funded and in various phases of planning, design and construction:
Kittitas County:
Ellensburg Water Company/Cooke Creek- This was a YTAHP early action project that was designed, engineered and constructed during FY02 and FY03. It involved correcting an uncontrolled creek and canal intersection and providing fish screening and passage structures for the water diversion from Cooke Creek. Over $300,000 in YTAHP funds were utilized, along with private EWC funds. More information. . .
Cooke/Caribou Creek- This was a YTAHP early action project that was funded by YTAHP. It was designed, engineered and constructed during FY03. It involved converting 300 acres of rill irrigation to linear sprinkler irrigation systems, screening a diversion from Caribou Creek and abandoning two diversions on Cooke Creek. Nearly $40,000 in YTAHP funds were utilized, along with the Irrigation Efficiencies Program, the Natural Resources Conservation Service's Environmental Quality Incentives Program and landowner funds. Lower Wilson Creek- This project is one that the KCCD was only peripherally involved in until 2003. Issues with funding sources and project timing resulted in the Yakama Nation transferring a $108,000 Salmon Recovery Funding Board grant to the KCCD. The project involves correcting fish passage and screening issues and upgrading the irrigation system from rill and flood to sprinklers. More information. . .
Dry/Cabin Creek- This was an YTAHP early action project during FY02 and FY03. It involves consolidating three diversion points into one, upgrading from flood to sprinkler irrigation and removing barriers to fish passage. An application was successfully submitted to the Salmon Recovery Funding Board for $164,000. More information. . .
Coleman Creek- This was an YTAHP early action project during FY02 and FY03. It involves the replacing a perched and undersized culvert with a bridge and the addition of control structures at the intersection of the terminus of a small canal and Coleman Creek. An application was successfully submitted to the Salmon Recovery Funding Board for $101,000. More information. . .
Manastash Creek - The KCCD has worked with water right holders on Manastash Creek since May, 2000 to provide assistance to correct fish screening and passage issues. In 2001 the water right holders received a draft letter of intent to sue from the Washington Environmental Council. That action initiated a negotiation and then collaboration between agencies, landowners and environmentalists that resulted in $2.24 million from the 2003 Washington State Legislature. Yakima County:
Diversion 14 Fish Screen - Ahtanum Cr- The NYCD is sponsoring this project that addresses the last unscreened diversion on Ahtanum Creek, located at RM 11. The Project will protect steelhead, bull trout, and possibly coho and Chinook juveniles. Riparian restoration is planned in vicinity of project. There are several miles of accessible habitat above project.
